Substance Abuse Prevention For Disaster Impacted

Think the disasters are over? Employee & Family Resources (EFR) reaches out to the community by promoting substance abuse prevention to disaster impacted residents

February 5, 2010 — Prevention specialists at Employee & Family Resources (EFR) are actively reaching out and networking with area communities and residents impacted by last year's weather disasters.

"While the weather disasters are over, many people continue to be stressed and we know on-going stress is one of the major factors influencing the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco," said Davi Ellis, Prevention Supervisor at Employee & Family Resources (EFR). "Youth who are exposed to stress may be particularly vulnerable." According to Ellis, "We want to offer information to local communities on stress and substance abuse as well as provide alcohol and drug-free opportunities for families to get together and enjoy positive social activities."

The funding for this important community outreach is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Employee & Family Resources is part of a statewide prevention campaign being conducted by IDPH. The statewide campaign includes television and radio messages, billboards and media outreach as well as focused treatment services.

"Central Iowans do have a place to turn for help for stress-related substance abuse prevention. Our message is simple. Call the Iowa Concern Hotline 1-800-447-1985," said Ellis.

Employee & Family Resources' prevention specialists will be sharing this message through social media and attending community events and networking opportunities.
