EFR has a rich history of helping families, workplaces and communities reach their full potential over the past 50 years. Founders Dorothea Tone & Anna Meredith identified a need for information and local resources to address alcoholism. They assembled concerned citizens and established the Iowa Affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism (NCA) to provide alcohol information and advocacy services to the community. EFR's early efforts were instrumental in establishing local treatment programs for alcoholism and alcohol abuse.
In 1975, the organization responded to the needs of employers struggling with the impact of alcoholism in the workplace by establishing Iowa's first Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and the nation's first public-private employee assistance partnership with county and local school districts. With the development of these services came the organization's expansion into the fields of mental health and family counseling.
The addition of the EAP program was closely followed by establishment of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) in 1978. A decade later, the success of the EAP led to the expansion of its services to employees of companies at nationwide locations.
Over the years, the organization's mission has expanded to address community needs and trends, incorporating mental health care, substance abuse assessment and referral services, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), public health and prevention education, and broad-based student and family services. EFR was instrumental in the administration of a statewide substance abuse managed care program, designed to provide comprehensive services to individuals in substance abuse treatment.
EFR has long believed that the key to improving emotional and physical health is through long-lasting behavioral change. At the core of our services are health prevention specialists, credential counselors, workplace performance professionals, and wellness coaches who help individuals, families, and workplaces focus on what matters most.
EFR continues to build upon its vision of delivering prevention, intervention, and treatment services that support and enhance the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities, by focusing on whole health and wellness to be the wellness solution resource.
